Where to Shop
Stroll down Hurghada's shop and boutique-lined Hospital Street in Ed-Dahar, curving from Sharia Aziz Mustafa down to Corniche Street, or browse through Egyptian books at the cosy Aboudi Bookshop on Al Mustashfa Street. For mall-style shopping, the Market Place Shopping Centre on Ad-Dahar is best.
Designerwear
Seek out Gecko New Sportswear in Jasmin Village, where long-time Hurghada-resident Tommy Friedl sells his own, hugely popular, lines of beachwear. Made locally, these are easily Hurghada's most stylish shirts and flip-flops.
Markets
Head to Ed-Dahar for the city's main bazaar, where busy merchants loudly offer their goods and donkeys roam the streets. Get lost in the array of spices and herbs, colourful rugs and authentic leather products, then take a seat in a street-side café and watch the action from a distance.
Gifts
It's easy to find quality souvenirs in Hurghada's markets, from shiny brass and colourful glassware to shisha water pipes. If your suitcase is big enough, haggle for a low, wooden tea table with a carved brass tray on top. For Bedouin jewellery and dolls, visit the souvenir shops on Corniche Street.
Shopping Tips
Don't be afraid to bargain for items, especially at the bazaars, rug shops and street markets. Look at the price tag, offer around half the amount and take it from there. Haggling tactics include looking for flaws, saying you've seen a better deal elsewhere and feigning disinterest. Bear in mind that shopping hours might change drastically during Ramadan.
